Portrait of Elian
This photography series represents Elian as a visual metaphor for what a non-binary person is.
Elian (they/them) is a genderqueer makeup artist and healthcare worker from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan (Treaty 4). They live in 'Vancouver' with their girlfriend and their cat. They enjoy being around plants and greenery.
To them, the label non-binary is a starting point. It's the most legible and compact piece of identity that teaches people how to relate to them. The way we can think about is that no two people of the same gender have the same experiences, in a similar way, an experience of a non-binary person cannot be defined in a single word or a statement.
In their own words, “My gender is contextual, and so is yours.”
Elian's favorite quote is, "Gender is the poetry each of us makes out of the language we are taught" by Leslie Feinberg. \\ IG: @elian.mua
